Chief Robert “Bob” Costello dedicated his life to public service, education, and the advancement of the Arizona fire service. His career spanned law enforcement, fire suppression, fire investigation, emergency medical services, and statewide firefighter training, leaving a lasting impact on communities across Arizona.

Bob began his public service career as a patrolman with the Peoria Police Department and as a firefighter with Rural Metro Fire. He later joined the Arizona State Fire Marshal’s Office, where he earned widespread respect as a Fire Inspector and Investigator. During his 16 years with the State, Bob held multiple leadership roles, most notably serving as Training Director, where he became responsible for the Annual Arizona State Fire School—a role that allowed him to shape generations of firefighters.

A passionate educator, Bob traveled extensively throughout Arizona delivering Firefighter I and II training, particularly to rural departments with limited resources. He was a certified instructor at six community colleges for more than two decades, and teaching was not just part of his career—it was his calling.

In 2004, Bob joined the Buckeye Fire Department as Fire Marshal. By 2008, he had risen to the rank of Fire Chief, becoming a trusted leader within the City of Buckeye. As Chief, Bob implemented a groundbreaking Community Paramedicine Program, consistently advocating for innovative solutions that best served citizens and firefighters alike.

Bob’s leadership earned statewide recognition, including Health Care Hero and Heroism Awards, and appointments by two Governors to serve on the Arizona Emergency Medical Services Council. In 2012, his lifelong contributions to the fire service were formally recognized with his induction into the Arizona Fire Service Hall of Fame.

Chief Costello passed away on April 8, 2021, due to cardiac arrest stemming from complications related to COVID-19. His death was a profound loss to the Arizona fire service, but his legacy lives on through the countless firefighters he trained, mentored, and inspired.
